The streak tied for the second longest in club history, behind Gabe Kapler’s 28-gamer in 2000.“It wasn’t meant to be,” Semien said. “If I got up in the ninth, walked and scored a run, I would have been happy.”St. Louis salvaged the final game of a trip following five losses and ended the surging Rangers’ five-game winning streak.Jordan Hicks (1-3) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the victory, and Ryan Helsley finished for his seventh save in 11 attempts. ATLANTA (AP) — Charlie Morton went to find Pete Alonso and apologize for hitting him with a pitch that knocked the Mets slugger out of the game.Alonso appreciated the gesture.“He came up after I got X-rayed,” Alonso said after the Braves beat the Mets 7-5 on Wednesday night. “He was looking for me. He just wanted to apologize. Obviously he didn’t mean to. For people speculating for this or that, I just wanted to clear that. Chuckie’s a good guy and the situation didn’t call for it either. There’s nothing to it. I just happened to get hit with an up-and-in fastball.”Michael Harris II hit a two-run, tiebreaking homer off Adam Ottavino in the eighth inning and the Braves rallied for their fourth straight victory. The third-place Mets wasted a three-run lead for the second straight night. They have lost five straight for the first time since 2021 and at 30-32 dropped 7 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the NL East.Alonso was hit on the left wrist by a 96 mph fastball fr...

Heat, following similar script as Game 1, lose to Nuggets in Game 3 with poor shooting

MIAMI (AP) — Those open looks Miami kept knocking down three nights earlier in Denver just wouldn’t go down back home. Gabe Vincent and Max Strus misfired all night and too many other shooters were cold in a 109-94 loss Wednesday night that gave the Nuggets a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Miami made 11 of 34 shots from deep in Game 3. And despite getting the looks inside that they wanted, the Heat simply did not knock them down, resulting in a loss in which their fans, once roaring as loud as they could as they swirled white flags above their heads, were finding the exits before the final minutes.Vincent shot 2 for 10 and Strus was 1 for 7, the starting guards combining to miss eight of their 10 attempts behind the arc.Miami made just 9 of 26 first-half attempts in the paint and matched Denver’s toughness early. Bam Adebayo had 13 points and 10 rebounds at the break, and the Heat only trailed by five entering the third. The Heat trailed by as many as 19 in the third, shoot...

Graham: Chris Christie is in it to win it – and have a good time

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:31:12 GMT

A Republican from the northeast, telling jokes, doing impressions, and even working a little blue. If you didn’t know better, you’d think it was a Donald Trump campaign event.Except that Tuesday night at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, the jokes were on him.Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may be the longest of long shots to win the GOP presidential nomination, but based on his last two appearances in New Hampshire (both town halls at the NHIOP), he’s decided that, wherever this campaign winds up, he’s going to have a good time getting there.Mostly at Trump’s expense. For example, when a member of the audience asked Christie whether, if elected president, he’d be willing to pardon Trump, he gave a serious and thorough answer to the question (spoiler alert: probably not) before adding that the question was moot.“By accepting the pardon, the person must acknowledge their guilt. And that’s why I’m completely in the clear,” Christie said as the crowd laughed. “That will nev...

Editorial: Bostonians deserve a say in major school changes

Mayor Michelle Wu is all for making “bold” moves and shaking up the “status quo” – these buzzwords are rife in her announcements hailing new offices or projects or policies. “Stakeholders” is another favorite, as in the need to consult with stakeholders on eliminating gas hookups in new construction, or enacting rent caps.“We continue to work with the advisory committee toward specific legislative language that would protect families from rent gouging and displacement as our city continues to grow,” a Wu spokesman said in a January statement. “We look forward to receiving additional stakeholder feedback before filing a proposal with the city council.”So where was all that stakeholder feedback when Wu and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper announced a “generational change” regarding John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science and Madison Park High School this week?As the Herald reported, the O’Bryant wo...

Real people, places save ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’

MOVIE REVIEW“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”Rated PG-13. At the AMC Boston Common, AMC South Bay and suburban theaters.Grade: BPlease send me the names of those clamoring for another “Transformers” film, who aren’t employed by or related to producers Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg. But here we are. “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which is set in 1994 Brooklyn and later in Peru, is sort of like a “Transformers” film with those shape-shifting Autobots grafted to a “Planet of the Apes” movie. The best parts of the film are the fraternal ties between the lead human, Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos, “In the Heights,” “Hamilton”) and his ailing little brother Kris (Dean Scott Vasquez) and between Noah and a wise-cracking, trash-mouthed Autobot named Mirage (Pete Davidson). Ably directed by Steven Cable Jr. (“Creed II”) and written by at least six people, “Rise of the Beasts” kicks off with the usual sepulchral narration. For the record, the film is a sequel to “Bumblebee” (2018) and...
