Slow zones plague year-old Green Line Extension

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:48:17 GMT

Slow zones due to unsafe tracks are affecting the MBTA’s newest tracks on the Green Line Extension. The extension to Medford opened in 2022, and inspectors have already discovered the distance between rails in some places has narrowed too much to maintain normal speeds.“When it’s really bad, it’s really frustrating,” one T rider said. The MBTA Dashboard shows numerous slow zones along the extension, often as slow as three mph until repairs can be made. The Healey Administration said the extension was largely built by the previous administration, and they have discovered the problem and will fix it.“Obviously I’m not happy about that but you know I can’t unring that bell,” Healey said. They were installed last year. I’m glad we detected whatever the issue is and it’s our job to fix it and deal with it which we are doing now.”7News rode the extension and saw the train quickly get up to almost 30 mph to quickly slow to 3 mph.“I was just debating getting off and getting an Uber,” said T rid...

Seiya Suzuki’s missed eighth–inning fly ball that sent the Chicago Cubs to a crushing 7-6 loss Tuesday will no doubt go down in infamy. The immediate reaction from Cubs fans watching at home was one of horror, as many flashed back to a similar play on Sept. 23, 1998, at County Stadium in Milwaukee.Like Suzuki, Cubs outfielder Brant Brown had been a key player in their wild-card race. But when a fly ball by Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Geoff Jenkins bounced off his glove with two outs in the ninth inning, bringing home three runs in an 8-7, walk-off loss, Brown felt like his world caved in.“Basically my whole philosophy all year, no matter if I’m starting or coming off the bench, is just to try to contribute,” Brown said that day. “Today wasn’t the best contribution. You just have to go on. Life goes on. It’s not the worst thing that’s ever going to happen to me. Hopefully it is, but you know, it’s just something tha...

Remains found of Colorado woman Suzanne Morphew, who went missing on Mother’s Day 2020

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Searchers have found the remains of a woman who was reported missing on Mother’s Day in 2020 after she did not return from a bike ride near her home in the Salida area in southern Colorado.Agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation found the remains of Suzanne Morphew, 49, during an unrelated search near the small southern Colorado town of Moffat on Friday, and her remains were positively identified Wednesday. Morphew’s husband, Barry Morphew, had been charged in her presumed death, but prosecutors dropped charges against him last year just as he was about to go on trial. Prosecutors had been barred by a judge from calling most of their key witnesses for repeatedly failing to follow rules for turning over evidence in his favor. That included DNA evidence linked to sexual assault cases in other states that raised the possibility of a different person being involved. At the time, prosecutors said they wanted more time to find Suzanne Morphew’s body. Guidelines for handling water samples are not provided. Details were vague on how First Nations and other area communities were notified.“There are no documented procedures for internal communication and escalation to management or the board,” it said. “We have received feedback from both Indigenous Peop...
